How Long Does an Interior Design Project Take?

How long does an interior design project take? Around six months, if your kitchen and bathrooms are already in and the work is mainly interior design. If there’s building work, think in years rather than months.

That’s the honest headline. The rest of this piece walks through a typical interior design project timeline: where the time goes, what slows it down, and what you can do to keep it moving.

Your interior design project timeline, stage by stage

The stages overlap. For example, we often order long-lead pieces while we’re still drawing the last details. That alone saves weeks.

What makes a project take longer

Building work runs in a fixed order. Plumbing and wiring go in before the walls are closed, tiling follows plumbing, decorating follows tiling. As a result, if one trade runs a week late, every trade after it does too. Some jobs need a room to themselves: while underfloor heating goes down, nobody else can work on that floor.

Most good furniture is made after you order it. Few makers hold stock, so they build each piece to order, often in factories on the Continent, and then ship it. A chandelier can take a month just to be assembled. That’s why, in practice, even a project with no building work rarely finishes in under three months.

Old and listed buildings add time before anyone picks up a tool. Listed building consent and conservation areas mean months of paperwork. On top of that, older houses hide things behind the walls. So, occasionally, do new builds: we’ve had to reinforce structure and rewire flats that were only a few years old.

Decisions. However, this is the one you control. A three-month project becomes six because a worktop decision took a few extra weeks, or the flooring changed after it was ordered.

The best people are booked up. Good contractors and joiners often have waiting lists. The earlier we know your dates, the more likely we can get them.

How to keep it moving

1. Agree the scope properly at the start. Most delays trace back to something that wasn’t decided early.
2. Make each decision once. Changes after the builder has started cost time as well as money. More on that in our guide to what an interior designer costs.
3. Hold back time, not just money. Build a few weeks of slack into any date that matters.
4. Book early. Especially if you’re working back from a move, a sale or the end of a lease.
5. Let one team run it. Our contractors message the studio directly through our project management system, so we answer questions the same day instead of waiting for the next site visit.

At the end, everything arrives on one planned day from our warehouse, not in a stream of couriers. Then we check every item, work through the snag list with the builder, and bring in cleaners before handover.

The short version

Six months for a design-led project. A year or more once walls move. Every interior design project timeline we write starts from the date that matters to you and works backwards. That’s far easier than starting and hoping.
