Hampstead interior design: a family house built around an art collection

The brief

Clean lines, calm rooms and nothing on show that didn't need to be. The clients collect contemporary art, and every main room had to give a piece room to breathe.

We'd worked with them before, on their previous home. This time the family grew from two to four while the project was under way, so the design had to keep up with how they actually lived.

What we changed

Layout

We cut the kitchen's doorways from four to two, so people move through the house without crossing the cooking space.

Art

Each main room is planned around one piece from the clients' collection, against a pared-back palette that lets the art lead.

Storage

In the lounge, the TV wall is a sculptural piece that hides all the AV kit. The kitchen and principal bedroom have cantilevered storage, and there's a bespoke coffee drawer.

Living

A gym, a playroom with its own kitchenette, and a home cinema rebuilt for a client who cares about sound.

Hampstead interior design: what to plan for

Most of our Hampstead work is in large family houses and period cottages, and much of Hampstead sits in conservation areas, with listed buildings among them. That can mean planning consent for changes outside, and listed-building consent for changes inside. If a basement is on the wish list, Camden will also want a basement impact assessment. We plan for all of this from the first meeting, so it doesn't hold up the build.

Renovating a Hampstead house

Whole-house renovations, kitchens, extensions and basements. We draw the new layout, specify every finish and work alongside your builder, so decisions are made before they hold up the site. For the kitchen, our guide on how to plan a luxury kitchen sets out the order we work in.

Flats and apartments

Renovating an apartment in Hampstead adds a freeholder to the list. Most changes need a licence for alterations, and the building will have rules on working hours, deliveries and noise. Floors and party walls decide which flooring you can have, so we check the lease before we draw anything.

Interior decorating in Hampstead

Not every Hampstead home needs a builder. When the house works and the rooms don't, we do the decorating on its own: colour, fabric, curtains, furniture, lighting and art, chosen to suit the house rather than fight it.

We've been designing London homes for 18 years. In that time, our bathrooms and kitchens have won national awards. The first conversation is free, and we can usually meet within a few days.
