We have spent over 18 years on period home interior design in London, from mansion flats in Maida Vale and Bayswater to Victorian terraces in Battersea and a Grade II listed manor house in Cornwall, and we know where the surprises usually hide.

Recent period home projects in London

A listed mansion flat in Bayswater. A reconfiguration adding a mezzanine over the lounge with a new window and glass balustrade. We secured planning and listed building consent, then the freeholder’s Licence to Alter.
A listed mansion flat in Belgravia. A substantial refurbishment with bespoke joinery in the kitchen, principal bedroom and living room and a wallpaper mural in the lounge, after a damp investigation that meant opening up floors to check the timbers.

A Victorian terrace in Battersea. A principal bedroom planned like a hotel suite, with full-width wardrobes, hidden TV storage and a tea and coffee station, and a calm en-suite in two tones of concrete-effect finish.

What we tell owners of old houses

Survey before you design. A measured survey is cheaper than a kitchen that does not fit.
Treat damp as a diagnosis, not a product. Find out why it is happening (opening up floors if needed) before anyone sells you a treatment.
Check whether walls are load-bearing before falling in love with an open-plan layout.
In a mansion block, the freeholder is a second planning department. Allow time for their approval and expect detailed technical questions.
Keep what is good. Original fireplaces, cornicing and floors usually cost less to restore than to replace, and they are why the house feels the way it does.
