The brief

Traditional with a twist. The family love the character of their period house but didn't want it to feel old-fashioned, so classic pieces sit alongside colour, pattern and a few surprises.

We started at the top: a walled-in landing and a run of box rooms that were only used for storage. A few years later the family asked us back to redesign the living and dining rooms.

What we changed

Top floor

We opened up the landing and turned the box rooms into two good-sized bedrooms and a guest suite with its own en-suite and work space.

Bathrooms

Pale blue tiles, patterned floors and dark vanity units, plus a utility room and built-in storage throughout.

Living room

A pink velvet ottoman and blue patterned rug bring colour to a calm, classic room, with space for the piano.

Dining room

A terracotta painted dado under patterned wallpaper, with a chandelier and round mirror over the fireplace.

Primrose Hill interior design: what to plan for

Most of our Primrose Hill and Regent's Park work is in tall Victorian and Georgian townhouses, and much of the area is a Camden conservation area. Reworking a whole floor means checking walls, services and what needs consent before the design is fixed, and phasing the work so the family can stay at home. We plan for all of this from the first meeting, so it doesn't hold up the job.

We've been designing London homes for 18 years. In that time, our bathrooms and kitchens have won national awards. The first conversation is free, and we can usually meet within a few days.
