The brief

Kids' rooms work hardest of all. They need to be fun now, easy to tidy, safe, and able to change as children grow, without a full redesign every few years.

Every family is different, so we start with how the children actually play, sleep and study, then design the storage around them.

What we changed

Storage

Built-in shelves, baskets and cupboards at child height, so tidying up is something they can do themselves.

Play

Slides, ball pits, teepees and reading nooks, including one tucked under the stairs.

Walls

Hand-painted mountain and tree murals, bird and animal wallpapers, and bold patterns.

Growing up

Loft beds, desks and grown-up colours behind the fun, so rooms adapt as children get older.

Children's room design: what to plan for

Safety comes first: secure furniture to the walls, choose rounded edges, check guarding on loft beds and use washable, hard-wearing finishes. After that, plan storage for the toys they have now and the things they'll have in five years, and leave room for change. We plan for all of this from the first meeting, so the room keeps working as your family grows.

We've been designing London homes for 18 years. In that time, our bathrooms and kitchens have won national awards. The first conversation is free, and we can usually meet within a few days.
