Clerkenwell interior design: a Hatton Garden penthouse refreshed without moving a wall

The brief

A clean, calm penthouse with natural materials, warm tones and high-end finishes, and a living room that works for relaxing and for exercise.

The layout already worked, so we kept it. The change comes from the finishes, the joinery and the lighting, which makes the before and after all the more striking.

What we changed

Living

A full-height bookcase with a library ladder, natural wood and plants make the lounge feel warm while leaving floor space free.

Kitchen

Contrasting wood and white cabinetry with a botanical splashback, flowing straight into the dining area.

Bathrooms

Both en-suites and the WC finished in porcelain marble, with a new shower in the main en-suite.

Mezzanine

A snug home office up the spiral staircase, built around pieces the client already owned.

Clerkenwell interior design: what to plan for

Most homes we work on in Clerkenwell and Hatton Garden are apartments in converted warehouses and newer blocks, often with mezzanines, high ceilings and big windows. Building managers have their own rules on working hours, lifts and deliveries, and changes to bathrooms usually need sign-off from the freeholder. We plan for all of this from the first meeting, so it doesn't hold up the job.

We've been designing London homes for 18 years. In that time, our bathrooms and kitchens have won national awards. The first conversation is free, and we can usually meet within a few days.
