Conversely, flexibility is a key feature in family-centric design, especially in homes where the needs of family members may evolve over time. Being where the family spent most of its time, the heart of this South Norwood property – the kitchen – took centre stage in the design process and was conceptualised to blend functionality with style. From sleek appliances to discreet storage solutions, every element was thoughtfully curated to cater to the family’s lifestyle needs. The styling was graceful and refined, with all the mod cons and client-specific requests. ⁣A large American style fridge/freezer was included, and the streamlined look also contained an invisible cooker hood. A mixture of colours was used, but jarring tones, such as stainless steel, were kept to a minimum.

Beyond the kitchen, the extension unfolded into multifunctional spaces designed to accommodate diverse family activities. A spacious dining area capable of transitioning from intimate family dinners to grand soirées, while a thoughtfully equipped utility space promised convenience and efficiency in household chores.

The extension’s social hub, a cosy lounge adorned with modern amenities and picturesque garden views, offered a welcoming retreat for leisure and relaxation. Additionally, a refined sitting room exuded understated luxury, providing a versatile space.

For the younger members of the family, the extension boasted a whimsical playroom adorned with climbing walls and vibrant hues, fostering creativity and exploration. With ingenious design elements and flexible layouts, each space was tailored to evolve with the family’s changing needs, ensuring longevity and adaptability. A Unified Living Space

Finally, the relaxing/living zone, has also been defined by a positioned rug. This is to identify the sofa area for reading, for being cosy and watching TV. Not only does the patterned rug soften this area, the task and floor lamps in this space help to do so too. Following the traditional look with a modern take, the purpose built storage, shelving and concealing TV unit has been built in this zone, creating a multi-use area. Although this home has other living spaces, our studio design team understood the purpose of this family being in the same room at the same time. This space has a different dynamics to the other zones in this room, it allows a breakout space for relaxing which is less formal to the other traditional rooms in the house.

To create connections through this vast space without the zones becoming disjointed (like separate rooms) and a broken-plan, it has been linked using a hand painted mural wallpaper, the same flooring throughout, the same colour scheme and the same textiles used for the pelmets and blinds for framing the windows with the same stunning views outside. Embracing openness and connectivity, open floor plans serve as foundational elements, erasing physical boundaries and promoting fluid interaction among different areas of the home. Strategic zoning then comes into play, delineating distinct functional zones while maintaining visual continuity, ensuring each space serves its purpose without disrupting the overall coherence of the design.

A Dedicated Laundry Space

Incorporating a dedicated laundry space into your home brings numerous benefits. Not only does it save time and keep you organised, but it also maximises efficiency and minimises clutter. By integrating a laundry area discreetly into your home design, you can enhance both functionality and elegance.

For families with active lifestyles like the one in our South Norwood project, a dedicated laundry space was essential. The kitchen, being the heart of the home, received significant attention, but the design process also emphasised the importance of efficiency throughout the house. Through careful planning, we incorporated a hidden laundry room behind a discreet door in the kitchen. This space not only accommodated two washing machines to handle the family’s laundry needs efficiently but also included thoughtful features like ventilation systems, drying solutions, and storage areas for school and play items.

One standout feature of the laundry space was the inclusion of a chute, allowing for easy transport of dirty clothes from the upper floors directly to the laundry area. This innovative addition saves time and effort, streamlining the laundry process and adding a touch of convenience to daily routines. With everything neatly organised in one spot, from laundry supplies to pre-treating stations, the chore of doing laundry becomes much more manageable and efficient.
